Summerhouse
Education & Equitation Centre today
joined an elite set of
further education
and work-based learning providers when it was awarded 'Beacon'
status in
recognition of its top class inspection results and outstanding performance in
their Learning and Skills Council assessment.
Summerhouse
Education & Equitation Centre was
today presented with
their award by the
Lifelong Learning, Further and Higher Education Minister Margaret Hodge at a
Learning and Skills Beacon Award Ceremony in Westminster
Mrs Hodge said:
"We must recognise and celebrate success in the further education and work
based learning
sector. Summerhouse Education & Equitation Centre has
maintained excellent standards in its delivery of key skills and equine
delivery of learning on a national basis, its self assessment processes and its
reporting and development planning. This is a local work based learning
provider to be proud of and I
look forward to
many more following its lead."
Avril Willis,
Director of Quality and Standards at the Learning and Skills
Council said
I'Today's winners
are, quite rightly, being recognised for their outstanding achievements.
Through our local offices, we will now work with these Learning and Skills
Beacons to identify how other colleges and training companies can learn from
their experience
and expertise. Sharing their good practice effectively will ultimately lead to
an overall improvement in the delivery of outstanding teaching and learning
through out the country .
"We must
enable more young people and adults, from all backgrounds, to access good quality
education and training if we are to continue to prosper in the increasingly
competitive international markets."

Notes
to Editors
This press notice
relates to England
1. Learning and
Skills Beacon status is awarded to Further Education colleges, sixth form
colleges and work-based providers. Plans are in place to extend Beacon status
to all other Post-16 provision, which is funded by the LSC and inspected by the
post- 16 Inspectorates. This new Beacon status replaces the previous Beacon
College scheme.
2. Only 13 Learning
and Skills Beacons have been awarded so far. Today's 12 brings the total to 25.
Beacon status recognises excellent and good teaching and learning across a
whole provider, which is supported by excellent or good leadership and
management. As a condition of the status, Beacons will be expected to share
their good practice and participate in collaborative activities. Each Beacon
receives funding to share their good practice.
3. The new Beacons
will retain their status indefinitely, unless new inspection/performance
evidence suggests that the standards, or the agreed Beacon objectives, are not
being met.
4. Selection
Criteria -the DfES will examine inspection reports to identify providers that
have achieved:
.
Grade 1 or 2 in leadership and
management;
Grade 1 in 1/3 of the curriculum areas
inspected, a Grade 1 or 2 in 1/3 of tht\ curriculum areas
and a Grade 3 or better in the remaining curriculum areas:
No Grade 45 or Ss in any area inspected; and
the LSC would then
be asked for an assessment of the provider's performance, including financial
health, and potential to share good practice and participate in collaborative
activities.
