Summerhouse Education & Equitation
Centre is the only work based training centre in the country to achieve
a Grade 1 at its inspection in September 2005. This
Grade for excellence in training was awarded by the Adult learning
Inspectorate in September and then sent for moderation and the report
released on their website in October.

There have only ever been 4
Grade ones awarded for excellence of training in work based Agriculture
and Equine training (See below, statistics for grade 1 achievements)
Summerhouse Education & Equitation Centre is a family partnership
based in Hardwicke, Gloucester. There are 3 partners; Sheila and John
Weston who are now retired and their daughter, Helen Gallop who is
the Centre Co-ordinator. Summerhouse was founded in 1978 mainly to
teach recreational riding with a couple of students a year training
for external examinations. It also has a riding for the disabled centre.
In 1997 Summerhouse had its first government-funded training contract
with five learners. Summerhouse also acted as a training supplier
to Talland School of Equitation and Steepleton Farm.
In January 1999 Summerhouse achieved a "Grade 2" at their
first Inspection. This inspection recognised the quality of training
but showed that we were new to work-based training. Actions included
that we continue to work towards producing a history to our new management
processes. At our 2nd inspection in August 2002 we achieved a "Grade 1"
Summerhouse now has a contract with Gloucestershire Learning Skills
Council for work based learning for young people. There are 38 Horse
Care Modern Apprentices in 7 placements in & around Gloucestershire,
including ourselves and one yard in Wales. There are 16 full time
and 7 part time members of staff. There are 20 assessors, six of whom
are internal verifiers. There is at least one trained assessor at
each work placement. Summerhouse acts as a subcontractor to Cannington
College, Bristol Centre. It also offers work placements to learners
on life skills programme with other training providers.
The Centre
has grown and can now provide:
-
A Second Indoor School,
25m x 65m (built in Jan 2001)
-
Olympic size outdoor arena, 52m x 80m
-
4 classrooms, access
to 9 computers, quiet study area, photocopier, OHP, CD rom, video
and video camera.

Summerhouse has expanded its business
over the last 3 years and achieved IIP reaccreditaion in January 2004. In
November 1999, Helen Munro was awarded IIP Champion Key Worker Award
for Gloucester and in November 2000 Helen Gallop was awarded the same.
The Learner attends the centre for an interview and riding assessment,
then comes for 2 days work experience. Within their first week, an
interview is held with the Training Team Leader who will discuss and
complete their Individual Training Programme, issue a Training Timetable,
allocate their assessor and mentor and give them their NVQ and Key
Skills portfolio.
After 4 weeks the Learner has another interview where they are given
their Contract, Job Description and Job Allocation. Targets are outlined
on a specific target sheet, which also relates to their NVQ, key skills
unit and element targets on their overview sheet, at the front of
their portfolios. They have a supervisor at all times on the yard
who monitors and helps with their training. The supervisor is always
an assessor who fills in the assessment sheets in their portfolios
as they achieve them.
As the Learner progresses and qualifies, they are encouraged to participate
in a wide range of jobs and activities on offer at Summerhouse ie
Customer Care, Livery Contact, Reception duties, Assistant Instructor,
Show Assistant for show jumping, cross country, dressage and gymkhana,
help with Pony Club, Adult Riding Club, Summerhouse Part Time College
Course, Riding for the Disabled, exam set up, course building, dressage
judging, show jump judging, Website build and office administration.
This enables all Learners to have a wide career choice.
There is also a dedicated careers wall in the Key Skills Study Room
plus a Careers Guidance Folder and magazine rack in the staff room
where all the main weekly and monthly publications are on display.
All Learners are taught to produce a CV as part of their IT training.
Helen Gallop is deputy chairperson
of the Sector Skills Council, ‘Lantra’s Equine Industry group committee.
Learners undertake duties with a Riding for the Disabled group. Two
placements also offer riding for the disabled at their centres, which
encourages Learners and staff to understand the needs of others.
